Thanks for all of you who bought our home made goods at the bake sale and who participated at the raffle! We hope that you enjoyed all the pastries and goodies as well as the great prizes! We raised 318.50 euros with the event so we’re a step closer to building a school in Rwanda. You can still donate money either via our website www.cemsforafrica.fi or drop your extra coins into the Schools for Africa donation box in the main building’s hall.

Curling
The CEMS Club organized a curling event at the beginning of April. None of us had tried curling before so it was fun to discover a new sport. Uncertainty on the birth place of curling still exists but some believe that it started in
Scotland due to written evidence while others point towards the Netherlands due to paintings(http://www.worldcurling.org/history.html). Regardless of the birth place, curling has gained popularity and is nowadays played around the world.
After a few practice rounds of throwing the stones and learning about the rules of the game, we dived into the game in teams of 3-4. Throwing the stones at the right speed and right angle took some practice in addition to balancing on the ice while sweeping it. Excitement spurred through the air as teams were able to place their stones in the middle of the house and kick the other team’s stones out. At the end, we had a fun evening in exploring a new sport.
Company Visits – Kalevala Jewelry & Fazer
Two company visits were organized this semester for the CEMSies. The first one was Kalevala Jewelry, which is a Finnish jewelry company. The company showed a glimpse into their history, Finnish touch in their products and marketing strategy. We also discovered the different phases of jewelry production during a tour of their manufacturing area.
Fazer is another company that we visited during the spring semester. After a briefing on the company and chocolate production, we were taken through the factory to see different product lines and heard more about Fazer and its chocolate production. At the end of the tour, we had time to try different chocolate bars and eat as much chocolate as we wanted. Of course we could also buy some sweets at the factory shop and even got goody bags to take with us.
Both of the visits were very informative and interesting. By seeing the actual production process opened our eyes to the importance of quality and process flow.
