CEMS’s Social Partners Mentioned in the NY Times

In light of the turbulent times that the global economy has been through, concerns about the sustainability of the traditional business models become increasingly important. The CEMS program addressed the rising importance of Corporate Social Responsibility by incorporating three social partners in 2010: CARE International, Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. Still in line with this CSR drive, CEMS has signed the PRME (Principles of Responsible Management Education) declaration.

The history of two CEMS alumni and the social partners of the program are mentioned in this article of the NY Times:

Skill Seminar: Professional Development

CEMS students at BearingPoint

On Tuesday 27th September, some CEMS students attended the Professional Development Skill Seminar, held by Professor John Darling in cooperation with BearingPoint.

Riku Santala (Managing Director of BearingPoint Finland) gave a presentation on the company’s business, pointed some current trends in the consultancy sector and emphasized the qualities that BearingPoint looks for on potential candidates.

Professor John Darling gave a short lecture on Leadership and Personal Fulfillment. Students reflected on what it means to be a leader and were given some techniques to enchance their abilities and skills. After watching a 1990 video featuring Og Mandino (author of several best-sellers, such as “The Greatest Salesman in the World”), the group discussed the importance of some of the rules for success in management mentioned by this author. You can check the first part of this video on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAx9os1KxN0

Professor John Darling has been teaching at Aalto University School of Economics as a Distinguishing Visiting Professor for over a decade. Currently, Dr. Darling lectures the course International Management Leadership, one of the CEMS courses available at Aalto. The 2011 ranking confirmed that the CEMS MIM program remains one of the best Masters in Management programs in the world, having once again secured its place as the number 2 Masters in Management course in the world.

The CEMS MIM has remained firmly in the top 3 since the creation of the FT rankings in for Masters in Management in 2005, climbing to no.1 position in 2009. When taking the ranking of the previous 3 years, CEMS remains the number 1 Masters in Management.

CEMS Club Helsinki donates 4200 Euro to UNICEF’s Schools for Africa program

At the end of the CEMS cooperation with UNICEF’s Schools for Africa program (more information below) CEMS Club Helsinki managed to collect 4’200 Euro in total. We are proud to have had the chance to contribute together with other CEMS Clubs to this important cause.

In all of the CEMS schools we have had the pleasure of enjoying some of the highest education quality in the world and I trust we all see the value of a great education and the impact it can have on one’s life. This is even more so in less developed areas, where education opportunities can transform not only individual lives but eventually entire societies. However, for millions of children even elementary education is out of reach. We at CEMS Club Helsinki wish our contribution can help UNICEF and others to provide these children with the vital opportunities to change their lives!

CEMS Clubs from each school participated by collecting money through various channels, such as donations, charity sales, parties, and so on. Here in Helsinki we organized several events of varying scale such as:

  • Charity themed parties
  • Selling overall badges and balloons during 1st of May celebrations
  • Donation box in the university lobby.

On the behalf of CEMS Club Helsinki I would like to sincerely thank all the organizers, volunteers and participants during these years! I’d also like to forward you to a new CEMS humanitarian initiative Senstation – an online platform for social business and positive news. For more information check Senstation

With best regards,

Jukka Kylliäinen
President – CEMS Club Helsinki

Responsibility and accountability towards the society are some of the cornerstones of the CEMS community and program. To reflect this, the CEMS Student Board started an initiative few years back to participate in the Schools for Africa project, which is a joint initiative between UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Hamburg Society for the Promotion of Democracy and International Law. The aim of the project is to increase the access to and quality of education for children in six countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe). CEMS Business Project 2011 in full speed

The spring 2011 semester has started and now we are already in full speed. The major part of the CEMS Spring semester is always the business project. This time at Aalto we are doing our project with the local corporate partner KONE. The project kick-off included first a session with practical information, followed by a problem solving seminar from another partner – McKinsey&Company. The next day was spent at the KONE premises where we received a lot of information on KONE itself and our projects in detail. All the teams are now working full speed with the assistance of their KONE contact persons to finish this intensive learning experience.

The Business Project is one of the main advantages of CEMS and is the culmination of the study program. 15 ECTS worth of real-life consulting work teaches students extremely valuable lessons in team work, project planning and execution as well as applying a varied set of skills and knowledge from their studies to actual business problems. The Aalto School of Economics has traditionally performed well in student evaluations of Business Projects and we are also expecting a memorable experience this year.

CEMS Exchange with an Ocean View

We have decided to provide KY students with a few short stories from around the world of what it is like to be a CEMS student on exchange. The first text is from our dear neighbour Norway:

I have spent the past two months enjoying the city of Bergen on the west coast of Norway. The semester got started with a CEMS Block Seminar. Block seminars are week long seminars on a spcial topic with corporate and academic guest lecturers. In Bergen the theme was climate change and corporate responsibility. We spent a week in the charming town of Voss enjoying Norwegian countryside, great food and interesting lectures by the local corporate partners Statoil and Statkraft – two major European energy companies. The seminar was a wonderful and unique way to start the exchange seminar, as all the cems students were able to spend several days getting to know each other well and become good friends.

Besides the seminar, what has made my CEMS exchange unique is the atmosphere amongst the students in the programme. The local cems club has taken good care of us, organizing events for us to socialize. Cems has also offered a great chance to get to know local Norwegian students. Normally it is quite hard for exchange students to get into the local student groups, but through cems it was very easy to get Norwegian friends. This has made the exchange so far a lot more interesting and allowed all of us to experience quite a lot more of this country than would otherwise have been possible.

Thanks to the local cems office we have had great opportunities to get in touch with companies here in Norway. In addition to the local corporate partners Statoil and Statkraft, we have had the privilege to do half day seminars with P&G, PwC and Accenture. Also the local cems club is organizing company visits to interesting new local ventures to get to know companies that are very unique to Norway.

Norway has so far offered some very unforgettable experiences. A night at a cabin that is a 7 hour walk from the nearest road, the whole university smelling like beer on a monday after a weekend of crazy parties in the basement, starlight sky lighting up with the Northern lights over the Atlantic ocean, just to name a few. It has been wonderful to see how different and how alike Norway is to home. Personally I would recommend anyone to visit this majestic country, if not for an exchange, at least for a holiday :)

Enjoy your semester in Helsinki and make sure you don’t miss the CEMS application deadline this year! :)

CEMS Nordic Forum approaches

CEMS Club Helsinki, in association with Aalto University, will be hosting the CEMS Nordic Forum 2010, from 7th – 10th April 2010.

Nordic Forum is the largest annual CEMS event organized by a CEMS Club for both students and companies. It is a special event created exclusively for CEMS students, consisting of 4 days of interactive skill seminars and social events with corporate partners and fellow students. The event is organized annually by one of the nordic members of CEMS alliance. This year it is CEMS Club Helsinki’s turn to welcome our friends from Copenhagen, Stockholm and Bergen to enjoy Helsinki. We are also expecting several guests from other CEMS schools around Europe.

This year the Forum’s theme was inspired by the recent creation of Aalto University and thus the skills seminars will be focused around: ‘Innovation by Fusion: Integrating Technology, Design and Business.’ The Nordic Forum will provide an opportunity for around 100 CEMS students and a selection of leading companies to come together, discuss and jointly discover the business opportunities of the future generated by innovations, design, and technology.

The event is organized in cooperation with some of our CEMS Corporate Partners. This year we have the privilige to work with and learn from KONE, Nokia, Shell and ABB. Our corporate partners would also like to get to know other Aalto students as well. Closer to the event we will let you know how you can also take part and meet our partners during Nordic Forum.

We hope that the entire student community here will warmly welcome our fellow business students as they spend these exciting and educational days in Helsinki.

More information on the Nordic Forum can be found at nf.cems.org as well as on Facebook http://bit.ly/cYF4Z1 and Twitter www.twitter.com/NordicForum2010
